Robert Buchanan MD

Robert Buchanan, MD, serves as chief of the Division of Neurosurgery and the Chief of functional neurosurgery and neuroscience at the Seton Brain & Spine Institute in Austin, TX. This is a UT Austin, Dell Medical School affiliated program. In this role, Dr. Robert Buchanan offers surgical treatment for epilepsy, movement disorders, pain, and other brain and spine disorders. Dr. Buchanan is only one of a handful of physicians trained in both neurosurgery and psychiatry.

Dr. Buchanan serves as an Associate Professor at UT Austin in the Dell Medical School. He holds that position in the Departments of Surgery and Psychiatry. He also is on the faculty of UT Austin in the Department of Psychiatry and the Institute for Neuroscience. He trains physicians and scientists in the hospital and in his laboratory.
His research focuses on the neurochemistry and electrophysiology of higher brain functions. He has an image guided TMS lab where brain function in neuropsychiatric disorders are studied.
Finally he serves the universal Catholic Church as a Member of the Pontifical Academy for Life. This is the bioethical council which advises the Pope and the Vatican regarding biomedicine.
